Greek Mythology
The Clashing Rocks are a perilous sea passage on the route of the Argonauts, formed by two rocky cliffs that close together and crush anything between them. Their importance lies in marking a crucial gateway on the voyage to Colchis and a test of whether the Argo could continue toward the land of the Golden Fleece.
The Clashing Rocks stand before the narrow waterway leading into the Black Sea, described as a dangerous entrance near the mouth of that sea. The two rocks rise on opposite sides of the channel, where tides and swift currents churn between them; any ship entering as the rocks close would be smashed.
In the tradition of the Argonautic expedition, the Clashing Rocks are the dangerous stretch of sea that Phineus warns Jason about in advance. They are not ordinary reefs, but two moving rock masses that collide with one another; a ship can pass only by seizing the brief moment when they draw apart.
The method for passing them also has the character of an omen. Phineus tells the heroes to release a dove first to test the way: if the dove flies through, the ship may follow; if the dove is crushed, the heroes should not press on. The Argo ultimately passes between the rocks with the crew rowing at full strength and with Athena's help, suffering only minor damage to the stern. Afterward, the Clashing Rocks cease drifting and become fixed cliffs on either side of the strait.
The story places the Clashing Rocks on the route after the Argo leaves the coast where Phineus lives and before it reaches Colchis. They are associated with the entrance to the Black Sea, a narrow channel, rough waves, whirlpools, and sea cliffs, making them a maritime passage on the expedition's route rather than a single island or city.
"Phineus and the Harpies" mentions this place: after Phineus is freed from the torment of the Harpies, he tells Jason that the Clashing Rocks lie ahead and teaches the heroes to test the passage with a dove.
"The Clashing Rocks" mentions this place: as the Argo reaches the entrance to the Black Sea, the crew follows Phineus's instructions, releases the dove, and passes between the two colliding rocks with Athena's help.
