Greek Mythology
The Apple of Discord is a golden apple in Greek mythology. According to tradition, Eris, the goddess of strife, threw it into the wedding feast of Peleus and Thetis. It was inscribed “for the fairest,” provoking a dispute among Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite and indirectly setting the Trojan War in motion.
The story of the Apple of Discord begins at the wedding feast of Peleus and Thetis. The gods are invited to the celebration, but Eris alone is left out. Angry, she comes to the edge of the feast and throws down a golden apple inscribed “for the fairest.” Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite all demand it, and the dispute soon reaches Zeus. Zeus refuses to decide the matter himself, and has Hermes lead the three goddesses to Mount Ida so that Paris may judge them. Paris ultimately awards the apple to Aphrodite, a choice that later draws together the fates of Helen, Sparta, and Troy.
The “power” of the Apple of Discord lies mainly in provoking conflict and forcing a decision. It arouses comparison, jealousy, and rivalry, bringing grievances that might have remained suppressed into the open. As an iconic mythic object, it also symbolizes the dangerous link between beauty contests, rewards, and disaster. Whenever it appears, it usually means that a greater conflict has already begun.
The Apple of Discord is a mythic object bearing a provocative inscription. It is not famous for sharpness or physical power, but for the destructive force of comparison and rivalry. Its importance in the story lies not in the fruit itself, but in the way it magnifies resentment at a feast into open conflict among the gods.
No story assigns it to a fixed bearer. In the common version, Eris casts the apple beside the wedding feast and uses the words “for the fairest” to force the goddesses into competition. Later, when Paris is ordered to judge the three goddesses, the apple becomes the token by which he makes his choice. It is therefore often seen as the iconic object that starts a quarrel and compels a judgment.
In The Wedding of Peleus and Thetis and The Judgement of Paris, the apple is described as a golden apple and is linked to the inscription “for the fairest.” In broader classical tradition, it is often called directly the “Apple of Discord” or “Apple of Strife.” Different versions emphasize different points, but all treat it as the key object that creates division and triggers later disaster.
